Good starting point

I bought this book because I moved into a role using ASP.NET and C# although I'd never used these before. I found this book to be very well written, without the jokey patronising style of some other "Beginning ..." books I have bought. Although a lot of information can be found via the internet, it tends to be very tightly topic-focused, can be wrong, incomplete or very out-of-date, and what this book does is to give the reader a broad framework into which more specific pieces of info can be fitted.It does give a very good overview of the fundamentals, including, for example using Visual Studio - e.g. I'd found out how to create a project but I didn't know the difference between that and a website, and why a co-workers site generated .designer.cs files but mine didn't. I've by no means covered the whole 800+ pages, but enough to confidently recommend this as an intro for a capable developer new to ASP.

Excellent book

I would highly recommend this book if you want to get started with ASP.NET development in C#.It is written in an excellent style which is both technically competent and easy to understand. Although it is an introductory text, it actually covers a wide range of subjects related to ASP.NET. This book enabled me to build a website with secure logins, consistent themes, and effective access to a SQL Server database, and I have still only properly read about half of the chapters!As with any modern technology, there is a lot to learn with ASP.NET, and you will probably have to search the thorough online documentation to achieve everything you need to. What this book gives you is a great understanding of the fundamentals so you are then able to comprehend and make good use of the online documentation which would otherwise be overwhelming.Definitely one of my better purchases!

A garbled text, ruining a great classic

I read this book many years ago, and looked forward to re-reading it. My pleasure in rediscovering Stendhal's wonderful style and content was much reduced by the extraordinary number of errors I found in the text: grammatical mistakes abound, words and presumably whole sentences are missing, as parts do not make sense, spelling is awry, etc. I am left wondering how this book, which was stated to have been produced by volunteers, in fact came into being. Is the text scanned? If so, how do so many errors creep in? An explanation would be welcome.

Autant j'ai suivi les péripéties de Julien Sorel (LE ROUGE ET LE NOIR) avec entrain et passion , autant j'ai eu du mal à finir le premier volet de LA CHARTREUSE DE PARME. D'ailleurs, je n'ai toujours pas trouvé le courage d'entamer le deuxième volet. Le personnage principale manque de définition, manque de charme et ne fait rien de grand intérêt.

Little world, but not lacking content

Whilst the name is 'Little world', the book was much thicker than I expected and I was pleasantly surprised with how many comics they managed to fit in. As a fan of Liz Climo it was a treat to look through, and certainly made me smile.

Probably the most all-encompassing Dahl book

Of all of Dahl's books, I've thought that The BFG is the most encompassing of Dahl's different sides as a storyteller.I love the way it distils all his different facets as a storyteller into one book. It has humour and heart in equal measure. I also love the craftsmanship and the structure that binds the whole story together.The book is anchored by the friendship between Sophie and the eponymous giant. Although the friendship starts off shakily when the BFG snatches Sophie from her orphanage, the friendship literally hits the ground running the moment that the BFG hears that Sophie is an orphan. Sophie views the world around the BFG and the giants. Halfway through the book, she is roused to act to stop the giants from guzzling more humans, especially "chiddlers". All the experiences in the first half come together in the second half when the two friends mix the dream, meet Queen Elizabeth II and execute their plan to capture the cannibalistic giants.I love the charm that exudes from this book. The BFG is a winsome character in every way. His jumbled-up language and made-up words endear him to the reader. The made-up words might be enough to make Dr Seuss blush. In addition, the Quentin Blake drawings make him look charming to the readers, including the large elephant ears. Dahl reveals him to be a kind character from the moment he becomes friends with Sophie. He wrote this paramount virtue into the book and his character and he embodies the Bertrand Russell quote about founding the good life on love and knowledge. The kindness extends to the way the two friends deal with the nine man-eating giants at the end after they capture them. Dahl makes the readers feel satisfied that the punishment fits the crime. The BFG and Sophie are not punitive like the Allied leaders who impose the Treaty of Versailles at the end of the First World War. Rather, I like the way that they make us all believe that we can move mountains and overcome our insignificant stations in life to make a difference. There is something so endearing about the BFG that even when Dahl describes the (inherently naughty) act of whizzpopping, he does not descend into coarseness or vulgarity.I know that Dahl's stories are a product of the psychedelic, swinging Sixties even though he his books appeared between 1961 and 1990, the year of his death. Yet I still spot a timeless quality in all of them, especially in this story. Dahl makes the story feel like a dream that wishes to linger in the air forever. Also, as in many Dahl stories, I spot allusions to the folklore and stories of the past. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory reminds me of Cinderella, while Fantastic Mr Fox reminds me of The Tale of Peter Rabbit, with moral and ecological concerns deftly mixed in. In the case of The BFG, I am reminded of all slow-witted giants that have figured in fairy tales and myths, ranging from the Cyclops to the Norse giants and the giant from Jack and the Beanstalk (which merits an allusion here). it's interesting that Dahl alludes to this fairytale when the BFG blows the nightmare into the Fleshlumpeater's face. I see The BFG as a kind of David and Goliath story, in which the BFG and Sophie are like David battling the Goliaths of the cannibalistic giants. Dahl returns to the David and Goliath theme in the story of Matilda, complete with its head-on confrontations with Miss Trunchbull. Also, in the meeting with Her Majesty, Dahl alludes to the nursery rhyme about the pussy-cat who went up to London to look at the Queen. As such, this combination of old and new traits allow the Dahl stories to feel timeless and not date.I love the way that Dahl structures the story and the book. Despite the tension, I note that it is very well-structured and well-ordered. The motif of the cannibalistic giants threads its way through the book. Also, the two friends put together their plan of getting rid of the cannibalistic giants in the second half of the book after Sophie experiences everything about the BFG's existence. This is an apt demonstration of the problem solving process in real life. Solutions can't come fully-formed at one go, on the spur of the moment. The various elements of a solution float around before they can be discovered and put together. I see a parallel in The Witches when the boy-mouse absorbs all he observes around him to destroy the witches with the mouse-maker after they turn him into a mouse half way through the book.Although nearly every Dahl book is an absolute winner, I think this will endear to more people than any of his other books. It is so charming and does not come across as shrill and strident like The Twits or George's Marvellous Medicine. The friendship between the two main protagonists makes readers wish that the BFG were real and could be their friend. In addition, the take-home points are an added bonus. As such, I like to think of this book as an excellent starting point for readers just coming into Roald Dahl.

I am really happy with this product and wanted to include a comment to help others to confirm that all pictures inside are colour. I have purchased this for a 6th Birthday present but my daughter of the same age was very keen to include this on her birthday list too.

Fun book for children and adults alike!

I missed reading this as a child. As an adult I enjoyed this hugely, but I know I would have LOVED it as a child. The story has a pleasurable pace and kept me engaged, the characters were beautifully described with attention to detail and humour. It's Roald Dahl, what is there not to love!? A classic! My inner child is smiling with glee!

Interesting, visually compelling accompaniment to 'This Is Gonna Hurt' Sixx:AM album.

Following Mötley Crüe's biography - 'The Dirt', Mötley Crüe reformed and headed out on the road, although they did not produce much in the way of new music. Instead, Motley Crue's main songwriter, Nikki Sixx, began pursuing other creative interests including revisiting diaries written whilst in the height of his Heroin addition in the 80's, released as the Heroin Diaries in 2007. The material in the diaries inspired Sixx, along with guitarist DJ Ashba, and producer/vocalist James Michael to record an accompaning soundtrack album under the name of Sixx:AM.Both projects were hugely successful, and when the promotional cycle ended for the book and album, Sixx:AM began looking into the idea of a new album.The lyrical theme of the album was about finding beauty in things which society may not ordinarily deem attractive or beautiful - explored in the song 'Lies of the Beautiful People' from 'This Is Gonna Hurt' album. This concept inspired Sixx to use his new found passion for photography to create a collection of photographs and musings on this subject - which became the companion book to 'This Is Gonna Hurt'.Although the Heroin Diaries was an extremely revealing book, detailing the huge impact addiction had on his life, This Is Gonna Hurt can be viewed as more of a creative project, looking at the way society behaves and acts.The photography itself is very unusual - for previews of some of the type of photography see the cover for the single 'Lies Of The Beautiful People'.The theme continues visually throughout the book, with Sixx adding thoughts and ideas in a similar journalistic manner as with the Heroin Diaries.Unlike the Heroin Diaries, this book is inspired by the theme running through the accompanying album, rather than the other way around.Overall this is an interesting and worthy successor to The Heroin Diaries, although very different. Those that have kept up with Sixx since Mötley Crüe reformed in the early 2000's will probably be aware of what to expect. Those looking to get into Sixx's published output for the first time may be better directed to the Heroin Diaries as a place to start.

Beautiful Scars

I love Nikki and his style, his attitude. He's actually been the inspiration for a character in my own books.His photography is awe-inspiring, and I love the fact that he has combined some moments from his life and his way of thinking to stand alongside his beautiful, thought-provoking art work. It's like somebody has said: 'This is my world. Come and go as you please, it may help, it may not - I don't care. But here it is, and I make no apologies for it'.He's so rock'n'roll, and in the sense of what Rock'n'Roll SHOULD be, not just what it is. This should be a favourite among people who are both intelligent but feel outsiderish. I love both just flicking through the pictures as well as taking my time over chapters, because it's like Alice down the Rabbit Hole with someone's head.Awesome. Worth the investment to help you start up on your own artistic ideas.

Very dissapointing

This book is sadly lacking in relative information for those considering a lightweight trip. There is nothing in it that couldn't be found on equipment manufacturer's websites, and there are a number of lightweight backpacking sites offering free guidance of far greater relevance. Save weight and money, and type 'Lightweight Backpacking' into Google instead.

As a beginner lightweight hiker, this book has provided me with an abundance of ideas, tips and tricks for how to lighten my load.All brought over in an easy to understand way, and sometimes a bit tongue in cheek (the pictures), but always with good, sensible advise.This book will definitely see some good use, and I suspect I'll still come back to it when I've developed my light weight hiking skills further.

Timeless Classic

Written in an age of innocence and genteel charm this is the story of a horses life ,his adventures owners and drivers ,some good some bad. A story written when class division was uppermost. Lord's, Ladies , Masters and Mistresses. Beauty' s story begins and ends in a shady meadow but in between he experiences several owners from Squires and Masters to cab drivers and delivery men. ,Some treat him well others not so, but throughout he strives to do his best. He loses friends and indeed owners who sadly pass away, each event a trigger for more change , a resilient character he soon overcomes adversity luckily with the aid of a kind person. One of the first books I remember reading ,it hasn't lost it's charm.

A classic mega seller

Lots of great reviews for this classic. I got mine free on kindle and at some time I hope my daughter will read it. She's horse mad but she prefers being with them rather than reading about them.The book is geared towards the horse lover and I can't relate to that. I know my daughter gets more out of being with horses than I could ever imagine and this book is aimed at those who bond with horses and will feel part of the story.I did read it when I was in my teens and I still remember parts of it and also I remember watching the TV series back in the 70's.I wouldn't say it's a literary masterpiece but it is a huge seller and has a place in the history books as a true story of childhood, horses and choices. Lots of lessons and good advice throughout and doing the right thing wins through in the end.It is a very good story that reaches a particular audience, so for a horse lover it's sure to be a big hit if you can get them out of the stable.

"How To Look After Your Horse" - disguised as a children's story

Written for the Victorian readership, this is the life story of a horse. The book has never been out of print, or lost its appeal, and at the moment, the Kindle edition is free, so download it, and enjoy it.Ok, some suspension of disbelief is needed, but no more than a great many other stories.The main leap of faith required is that horses can understand human speech perfectly. Furthermore, they can talk to each other (unbeknown to humans), with a full and varied vocabulary, they have an almost humanlike code of conduct, they forge lasting friendships, they have long memories, and they are capable of deep feelings, such as love, happiness, sadness, pain, or loyalty.Of course, these attributes are essential; because our tale is narrated by the horse himself, Black Beauty, a handsome, good-natured thoroughbred stallion..... and so to the story itself.Our protagonist, Black Beauty, tells us about his life, in which he is bought and sold numerous times over the years, frequently passing to new owners and situations, with varying levels of treatment.He is expected to perform in many different ways: as a riding horse, pulling carriages, as a cab horse, as a hire horse, but always working, never as a "pet". I was reminded of the way we view our cars nowadays - to the Victorians, a horse was a commodity, an essential form of transport, albeit a living one,This, however, is a story with a message - not exactly subtle, the message is delivered with sledgehammer tactics. It is quite obvious that the main purpose of this book is to educate people as to the correct treatment of horses.With each passing chapter, Black Beauty is subjected to just about every good or bad experience possible to a Victorian horse, and each time the reader is left in no doubt as to the "learning point" of the chapter - don't overwork your horse, be kind to your horse, don't use a bearing rein, keep the stable clean, don't ride when you're drunk, etc, etc. If the bad or good thing hasn't happened to our hero, it will happen to one of his horse friends, who will then obligingly relate it to Black Beauty during the story.Despite the very obvious "horse welfare" lecturing tone running through the book, it still worked for me. I managed to enjoy it as a charming story, and I found myself becoming immersed, routing for Black Beauty, and wanting things to turn out well for him. The ending was very moving - I challenge anyone to read it without feeling some emotion as they finish that final page.
