Kindle edition almost unusable

I bought the Kindle version of this great play to facilitate reading out loud in a group. But the erratic pagination, with the text suddenly broken by blocks of footnotes, often in the middle of a sentence, made me give up and return gratefully to a properly printed edition - albeit one with a much smaller typeface.It is also extraordinary that the Acts and Scenes are not individually indexed in the table of contents. The whole play has but a single heading! To find your place you have to page through the whole text, or search for a key phrase. To have set this up properly would have meant but an hour or so of editing work. Not to have done so takes away one of the main benefits of an electronic version.Similarly, the footnotes could surely have been better placed all together at the end with live links from the text. The way they are done at the moment is simply infuriating.The impression I am getting is that Kindle editions are sometimes created carelessly by people who have no love of the text or concern about presentation. Or even, extraordinarily, awareness of the potential of the new medium.Frankly, this was a complete waste of the admittedly modest amount of money it cost.

Great read!

I purchased this purely as a pleasure read but it would also be perfect for someone to use a part of a school or university course. It has a very comprehensive introduction but I found the accompanying notes explaining the text very brief in some cases. Having said that this is a very 'readable' Shakespeare play and does not, in my opinion, require flicking back and forwards very much as the text and plot are easily understood. If someone wants to expand their knowledge of Shakespeare this is a very good play to start with and great value. Highly recommended.

The No Fear series is invaluable to my teaching and brings Shakespeare alive for my students. After reading a very simple version of the plays we move to No Fear text and tackle Shakespeare head on! If you have always dreaded reading Shakespeare then check these out and dive into the Bards best loved tales. As for The Tempest, my most favourite tale of all by William!

Descripción Mozart´s Singspiel ´The Magic Flute´ is regarded as one of the greatest operas of theentire repertoire. What makes it a great work of art is Mozart´s unique ability to translate his humanistic ideals into music of extraordinary beauty and suggestiveness. The original libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder and Carl Ludwig Giesecle was a tale about good and evil, in which Sarastro, the highpriest of an enlightened brotherhood, abducts Pamina, whose mother is the evil Queen of the Night. The Queen sends Prince Tamino to save Pamina. Tamino not only falls in love with Pamina, but also accepts Sarastro as the incarnation of truth and goodness. Tamino´s counterpart is Papageno, the Queen´s bird-catcher, whose earthiness counterbalances Tamino´s idealism. Predictably, because of the Magic Flute and Papageno´s bells, love and goodness triumph, Sarastro overcomes the Queen of the Night,Tamino and Pamina are united after many trials, and Papageno finds Papagena, a female version of himself - the principal theme of the whole opera being love. This is the Schirmer Edition of the Vocal Score in the original German with an English translation by Ruth and Thomas Martin.

Its of course a classic and an amazing read,timeless....for me...Bought for my kid,just starting high school and ....they cant relate to it in any way,which i expected,and worse they cant understand the language its written in...I remember reading this book when in primary myself,as back in the 70ies this was children's classic literature.These days however its a different story it seems.Language has been seriously simplified....

An oldie but eternally great!

I first saw this film as an eleven year old. It had a big effect on me. I loved the film, and the main actors, Kirk Douglas and James Mason. It was/is a superb movie. I bought the DVD for my grandson, aged 6. he loved it, and has seen it at least six times, making about 10 times for me! An excellent movie from Hollywood's Golden Era, based on an idea by Jules Verne, a genius of imagination and latter day prophet!

Beautifully written and captivating

This is a book club choice which I was not at all sure about but at 49p for the Kindle version, it seemed churlish to not at least give it a go. It turns out that I am really enjoying it. The style of writing whilst obviously dated, is lyrical, eloquent and extremely easy to read. The story is entertaining and keeps you hooked.

Excellent fiction writer's tool

An excellent writer's tool, describing how and why 'showing' is better than 'telling' when writing fiction. Instead of writing that someone was 'scared', for example, it is far more interesting to the reader if you can show this using someone's actions, mannerisms and environment. The same applies to dialogue. I can't believe I have only just discovered this book. It will certainly help me to write my novel.

A true classic

Reading this aloud to my ten year old daughter was a real treat. It truly is a timeless classic, perhaps Burnett's finest work. Emotions such as grief are delicately wrought while the horror of being a poverty stricken orphan in the 19th century is well brought out, with this section of the book lasting a lot longer than I expected it would. Despite concerted efforts to humiliate and break the spirit of our heroine, she retains her sense of self worth and so who could resist the ending she undoubtedly deserves. My little girl had no idea about the story and so met each unfolding episode with shock, tears, wonder and delight: finally declaring (and she's a tough one to please!), that it was the best story she'd ever read or heard. I didn't read it myself as a child, but as an adult I was surprised at how well the author controlled the potential for over-sentimentality: Sara remains believable and likeable throughout. As you can tell, I thoroughly enjoyed the book.

Certain books feel like home. To me, The Secret Garden is one of those. It is a book full of familiar faces, familiar voices, familiar sights and smells. Returning to it is like the return of spring itself. Within its pages I feel safe, calm, at peace. Nature, magic, and the childish joy that comes with keeping secrets… What isn’t there to love? Frances Hodgson Burnett is poetic in the way she describes gardens revealing their secrets and lonely little girls watching their beautiful mothers from afar.In the end, it’s the characters that truly bring the story to life; both the children and the adults around them. Mary Lennox stamps and frowns her way into my heart, endearingly stubborn though she is. Dickon Sowerby is the wood fairy I dreamed of running away with when I was a child. And Colin Craven, with his wild tantrums and rude habit of stealing the show in the second half… I simply cannot help but adore them all!The Secret Garden, much like Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, is a story that was read to me when I was very young. It shaped me not only as a person, but as a writer. It inspired in me a love for words and nature. There is no better gift for a child than that!

The cover is so pretty and it looks amazing in the bookcase. As for the story, it might be a bit of an acquired taste. I like it because it has a lot of memories for me from reading it as a child, but then I could understand someone reading it for the first time, might find it a bit slow.If you already love this story and just want a nice edition of it, this is definitely the book for you.

One of my kids' favourites!

This book has been very popular in our household, from the 6 yr old, all the way down to the 2 yr old (waiting to see what baby thinks)...very cute pictures, imaginative story, easy to read, and keeps their attention. We ordered another in the series after reading this because our kids liked it so much! The basic gist is that the baby makes up his own adventures using the crayon to draw them as he goes...so if he needs a road to get somewhere, he draws it and walks along, until he needs a tree, and draws that. Then a dragon to guard the tree...etc. Very cute. Will get more, I'm sure. Wish I'd known about these when our oldest few were smaller!

Clever idea; very well executed.

This book follows the adventure of Harold and his purple crayon. Harold draws things with his purple crayon and then interacts with the things that he has drawn. The text is simple but the story is strong - the illustrations are basic (they are just pictures that you could draw with a purple crayon!) but very effective.Great fun and very stimulating. When I read it with my son (4) after having forgotten about the book for a while it provoked a huge number of quite complicated questions about the nature of reality and imagination.Highly recommended.
