By Hugh Sedon
This is a strange book. it starts off very well, then falls away, but finishes with a hundred pages of sheer brilliance. it has this problem because the story line is very thin, unable to carry the book forward on its own.It involves two wealthy families and one poor one.The Schlegel sisters, Helen and Margaret, are rentiers and philanthropists, displaying idealistic 19th Century values; the Wilcoxes are nouveau riche, selfish, greedy, brash and ignorant- prototypes for the 20th century. The Basts are poor, made poorer by Mr. Wilcox: Leonard , vainly, aims to better himself by reading and the arts. The author's command of language and use of prose is outstanding- it is hard to think of better examples. You must persevere to the end- it is brilliant.

By Dr. W. S. Affleck
Disappointing; it's a book of which one expected a lot and I felt it simply didn't deliver. The exploration of class in England in the early 1900s is good but none of the characters are very sympathetic. The real action tends to be 'off-screen' which can be confusing. There are long descriptive passages which interrupt the narrative. I doubt they all (or at least the survivors) lived happily ever after.

.....to the mindless drivel you can download for free or almost-free to your Kindle now!Save your 20ps here and there and spend 99p on a classic. The premise is simple, elegant, and both traditional and modern: sex and class are what define us. Forster uses three intertwined families to play out the problems faced by so many people in the UK in the first part of the 20th century. Some of the questions raised are still relevant today (should we interfere in the lives of others?) whereas others are more rooted in the contemporary context (disastrous consequences of unmarried sex), yet still engaging and perhaps enlightening, depending on the reader.Forster creates a sense of place very skillfully, delinates characters in utterly convincing detail and manages a rather long time frame for the plot with skill.
