Clear and Comprehensive

As the title clearly states this is a a music theory book based on Jazz and with over 500 pages, at nearly A4 size, this book has lots of content. It requires a basic knowledge of music notation and being familiar with the Major and Minor scales, so it would be unsuitable for a complete novice unless they had the support of a teacher.. The music examples were mainly written for a piano or keyboard player, but I found them useful even though I play the saxophone. I have a small keyboard which I find helpful when I study music theory, but it's not essential to have one.There's examples of music on most pages and it is easy to read, and therefore play, from the distance of a music stand. This music has mostly been taken from Jazz standards published in Fake Books. There are sections in the book on albums to listen to and music books to play from, that have been recommended by the author and this is particularly useful if you are building up your collection of these.In my opinion, the best feature is the clarity and comprehensive explanations for each topic covered. Many music theory books leave too much detail out which results in confusion or even misinterpretation. For instance, I wasn't aware of the reason that Jazz musicians usually prefer to use the Circle of Fifths in a counterclockwise direction (because it follows the II - V - ! progression).Mark Levine, the author, also references the text which means that you can carry out further research for yourself if you want to explore a topic further.For most people, I think that there is sufficient content in this book to keep you occupied and interested and to be dipping into it for many years

The complexity and level of details of the book give you a hint about the level of detail and precision to which it goes to.Would definitely recommend this for people who want to learn in depth about jazz theory.

this book is awesome.

Absolutely a must-have for the musician who wants to learn jazz theory. I navigated other methods quite a bit, and when I got a hold of this book I realised that this is what I was looking for. This book however will make you raise questions and doubts, and you want someone with more experience than you to clear those. Also, musical examples are for piano (I am a guitar player), and this might be off-putting for some. It could be difficult at first, but go for it (and if you really want to learn music, you gotta know where to put your hands on the piano anyway - even drummers). Other than that, this book is awesome.
