5Avengers Assemble Again!
By Squirr-El
The story running through issues #18-24 of the Avengers (2010) is collected, along with issues 24.1, as Avengers by Brian Michael Bendis - Vol. 3 (Avengers (Marvel Paperback))."Previously": Fear Itself; Thor and Bucky are `dead', Avengers Tower has been destroyed, Tony Stark can't afford to rebuild it; Norman Osborn has escaped from prison. Begin. The story opens with a series of flashbacks to the recent big `events', the Civil War, the assassination of Captain America, the Skrull invasion, and the aftermath of the fall of Avengers Tower, as the SHIELD clean-up crews are err, cleaning up. One CSI is noticeable in the background at each event pocketing bits of forensic evidence...Captain America has moved the Avengers into Avengers Mansion ("I would like to thank Luke Cage and Jessica for opening the doors of Avengers Mansion to us"), to the surprise of the Cage family: "No one asked us, did they?" "No" "this is our house, right?" "I thought so". It is time once more to revise the membership. And there is a clash of the titans between Wong and Jarvis, and Ben Grimm comes to apologise for his actions in Fear Itself.Meanwhile, at Evil Mansion, the new HAMMER leadership - Norman Osborn, Madame Hydra (currently dead, but with a life-support octopus on her head - see Secret Warriors) and Dr Deidre Wentworth ("Superia" to her friends) are meeting with Doctor Carolina Washington, that SHIELD CSI. She is not happy at the irresponsibility shown by costumed heroes and groups in action. She has collected "the genetic secrets of the entire superhuman population": "My name is Norman Osborn, doctor. On behalf of everyone here, welcome to HAMMER".And so begins the next chapter in Avengers history - which will apparently be truncated by AvX, but one assumes that was factored in to the long term plan. The Avengers will see new members arrive (along with one of their very own currently dead ones) and several leave; an embarrassing confrontation with Norman Osborn at the presentation ceremony for the new line up, leading to a hunting down of Norman that leads to embarrassing failures at the hands of the now-super-powered and allied hordes of Hydra, AIM and the Hand, who now comprise the new HAMMER, and a final confrontation with Norman Osborn's new alter ego (and not the Iron Patriot or the Green Goblin: "I hate to repeat myself").This is an excellently written story, with superb supporting artwork, which sees the return of the final big gun to be missing since `Avengers Disassembled'.

4It's time to put the band back together...
By Axel McAsset
Previously in Avengers:The Vision was destroyed by She-Hulk in a fit of rage and slightly mind-warped by the Scarlet Witch. This took place in Avengers: Disassembled TPB (Graphic Novel Pb).Norman Osborn became head of world security, replacing S.H.I.E.L.D. with his own forces of H.A.M.M.E.R. and led his own dark Avengers team as the Iron Patriot. He was finally taken down in Siege.Avengers Tower was destroyed and Thor was killed at the end of the Serpent War in Fear Itself. Now:Reeling in the aftermath of the Serpent War, Captain America and Tony Stark need to rebuild their Avengers team. Lodging in Avengers Mansion, Cap gathers the superhero community to discuss, pick and choose the new roster. So who will be an Avenger? Hopefully, the Vision will be, as Tony Stark has been tinkering away for some time and has finally restored the android back to health.Meanwhile, Dr Carolina Washington, a S.H.I.E.L.D. scientist who has been collecting biological samples of superheroes and holds the genetic secrets of the entire superhuman population, defects to a newly formed supergroup of H.A.M.M.E.R., Hydra and A.I.M., led by none other than Osborn, recently escaped from Rykers Island Penitentiary. As Captain America reveals his new Avengers roster to the world's media, Osborn intercedes, demanding that the US government arrests the heroes for war crimes and reinstates H.A.M.M.E.R. as the world peacekeeping task force. With his own forces powered-up with similar powers to our heroes thanks to Dr Washington's genetic secrets, things look daunting for our Avengers, especially when Osborn turns into a Super-Adaptoid, able to absorb and retain any power he touches. This is a story that appeals to me. I loved the Dark Reign era that ended with Siege and this is a welcome conclusion to that (or is it?) in the wake of Fear Itself. There's a lot of Brian Michael Bendis haters out there but I'm not one of them, and I've enjoyed his reign on The Avengers. There's a lot of dialogue that I liked in this volume; the quips between Hawkeye and Spiderwoman as their romance blossoms, the investigation by Daisy Johnson aka "Quake" on John Walker the warden of Ryker's, and any interaction with Osborn and his minions as well as Madame Hydra taunting a defeated Cap. There's also nice little scenes with the President of the USA and his advisors as he ponders what to do about Osborn's demands. There's also plenty of action as our heroes go toe to toe with the super villains and their forces. There's even Apache helicopters and tanks. What's not to like? The artwork by Daniel Acuna is extremely pleasing to my eye and is a better quality that the two issues pencilled by Renato Guedes and Brandon Peterson, but the latter works are by no means shoddy at all.Overall, I'm pleased with this volume, which covers 8 whole issues; 18 - 24 and 24.1, the latter being just a "filler" issue about the Vision and him coming to terms with his place in a new environment, and probably sets a scene or two for what comes next: Avengers Vs X-Men.

4enjoyable dark reign aftermath
By novemberx2
the aftermath of Dark reign was sadly ignored in order for marvel to make the heroic age books more accessible to new readers. which was a shame because Osborn was such a great villain in bendis hands its hard to imagine him just been sweeped under the rug. the interesting thing about the book is that it quickly sweeps over the much hated fear itself aftermath.the story is this, not everyone like superheroes because they are unaccountable, Norman Osborn and hydra manipulate that feeling to make the avengers look bad and hydra have developed a army of super human soldiers with powers similar to the avengers. basically attacking the avengers from all sides.the book is only half of the story as the events run in parallel with the events of New Avengers vol 3.overall the dialog is classic bendis, its chatty, believable and not full of silly cliché super hero sayings. this just another issue in bendis great run on the avengers. he's without a doubt the best avengers writer to date.the art is bit of an problem here, its not consistent through out as there is 2 main artists. neither artists are bad, it would of just been better if only one had done the whole arc.the other reviewer points about the vision and hawkeye should be ignored. they don't ruin the experience, which is what matters most. he clearly prefers that OTT cheesy comic book style of the 90's (aka the one that nearly destroyed marvel). If that's your style to, find a jeph loeb book and avoid this. but if your like most people now, looking for modern superhero story and your a fan of bendis avengers, this is the perfect closure to the dark reign saga.
