By Godot
Perhaps unwisely, I rejected McNally's 'Hot Shoe Diaries' and Hagen's book on the 'Nikon CSL' because I was not looking for entertainment. I wanted clear explanations rather than a rib-tickling read. The fact that I am neither 'cool' nor 'hip' should have made me the ideal reader of this Field Guide, which I could see was rather basic and old-fashioned. I'd not bargained for quite how old-fashioned it is. At times the author's style reminded me of articles in 'Amateur Photographer' half a century ago. ('When I feel uninspired during a photo shoot, I can just open the folder [of poses] to get some ideas and creative juices flowing.') It's true that comes from a 12 page make-weight chapter on 'Posing Considerations', but there is a HUGE amount of that sort of corny padding. ('The higher up the chain you go and the more expensive the Speedlight gets, the more features, knobs, dials, bells and whistles you find.') As a piece of writing, it is dreadful - it is repetitive and badly in need of an editor - but the real problem is that it fails my test of usefulness. Go through it with a highlighter or with a notebook and pencil and on page after page there is nothing worth noting. There is information, of course, but it is very, very thinly spread. The 'Look Inside' allows you to read a few pages. They are woolly and vague and take a long time to get to the point. My mistake was to assume that, once I got past the introduction to the meat of the book, things would improve significantly. They do not. If, like me, you are searching for something between your Nikon manual and all those chatty 'inspirational' books, this is probably NOT the book you are looking for. It's not just a question of style or of being old-fashioned - some of the best books on photography are very old-fashioned. It's that it's not well organized. It's imprecise. It's less of a photographer's 'how to' - more a book for someone who wants to read (at length) about why pet photography can be challenging but rewarding.

By Doubleshot
When buying this book i read the other reviews and was a bit afraid whether is was what i am looking for, but it sure is. This is a great, if not the greatest, manual. The way it is written, with pictures and the seperate explanations for each speedlight is very clear en easy to read. And the picture used in the book are good en good to practive with. And this from someone who is used to read in Dutch and lives in holland. I can highly recommend it to everyone who wants use learn to work with there Nikon Speedlight system AND i guess the other books will also be good for other brands.

By dogsownluck
This book is a really good introduction to the Nikon Creative Lighting system. It gives a step-by-step guide to the models in the range as of 2010 - this does mean that some pages will not be relevant to every reader because they relate to Speedlight models that they don't have. However this is balanced by the usefulness of the general guidance given on flash photography and there are lots of sample pictures to illustrate different points. Overall well worth having if you have a Speedlight but aren't sure you are getting the most out of it.
