By Andrew Dalby
If you want a clear view of Einstein's model of Brownian motion then you have to read the original papers themselves. This book collects together five of his key papers between 1905 and 1908 in a corrected version (Einstein often got things wrong in the papers), with an additional commentary as a set of notes.Einstein was a clear writer and he was also very careful in showing how he had come to his views. This makes it very clear how the theory originated and what were the key steps towards developing the theory and this understanding makes quite a challenging subject more accessible. I would recommend it to anyone studying Brownian motion or statistical mechanics to see a great mind at work.

This is a good book which gives insight into the thought and investigations of early Einstein development. The mathematics has been simplified by missing out much conjecture and derivative, but with acceptance by the reader can still be followed. His work gave opportunities for other scientists to experiment and prove his theoretical predictions. Publications of this type are important, so that critical moments in scientific discovery through peer publication can be studied and related to present understanding. Much of scientific theory is based on mathematical guess work until technology can catch up to provide the experimental evidence for proof; this has always been so and is just as relevant today, compare the Higgs Boson quest. Einstein recognises this in these papers, but his work created the impetus, along with fellow scientists referenced in his work, to pursue the proof through further experimentation.

A hugely useful compilation of Einstein's papers on this subject with excellent commentary
