5Great book
By Daniel Marin Arcones
In order to learn a new language you need to master the grammar and vocabulary. This is a great book designed to broaden your vocabulary on a wide range of topics, especially those that may be useful for a traveller, like asking for information in a bank or in a visit to the doctor. It includes a lot of exercises and a brief dictionary, and also many useful b&w pictures. If you use it with Shaum's Outlines Chinese Grammar, you'll improve your communication skills very, very quickly.A minor drawback I could find is that only uses simplified characters (Schaum's Grammar uses both simplified and traditional).

5A must!

This has to be the most extensive Chinese vocabulary book that i have found for Chinese studies! The lists on different areas e.g. food and drink, at the airport, Hotels, banks etc are huge and cover so much vocabulary that can be put to such good use! This book coupled with 'Schaum's Chinese grammer' are the two best books that i have found in aiding me throughout my GCSE and soon onto AS-level.Don't buy this if you're an absolute beginner, this is beacuse there is alot of exercises that require good chinese reading skills to be able to complete. Also don't get this if you're a Cantonese student. The book only deals with simplified characters, making it inaccessable for Cantonese. However i can see why they've done this beacause the vocabulary sections would be even bigger that there are already!!If you are going to China on a trip, and don't know a single word of chinese then this could still be usful for you. The fact that the vocabulary sections at the end of each chapters are so large, it means that its likely you will find a word that could help you out and you could simply point out what you need to say...e.g. you could be feeling dizzy and your in a hospital trying to explain whats the matter...look in the hospital section and point to the characters for dizzy and your one step closer to being helped (even though you can't speak a word of chinese). All in all this book has helps me out during my GCSE period and i'm certain it will work just as well during A-level becuase there is so much to learn! Buy this and the grammer book and you will see a difference!

Good range of vocabulary. Didn't like the quality of the paper too much, but still a good resource.
