4Significant differences between editions
By Bryher
The edition on sale here is the second edition (1915) rather than the fourth edition (1927). Amazon flag that the book which will be supplied will be different from that shown both in the "Look-in pages" and in the contents list. However,it is difficult to discover the extent of the differences between these two editions because the actual contents of the supplied edition are not (so far as I could discover) listed anywhere - even on the publisher's own site. These differences are, in fact, substantial: the second edition lacks 6 pages from Chapter 9 (which cover Trigonometrical Series) and the entire Chapter 23 (42 pages)(Ellipsoidal harmonics and Lamé's equation). In addition, although the supplied edition has some corrections (which have been added in handwritten form) these do not seem to include all of the corrections which were made by the authors in the fourth edition. Of course, these differences may be of less significance to some readers, especially since the fourth edition (published by Cambridge University Press and also available on Amazon) is considerably more expensive. Furthermore, even with these omissions, this is a classic text from which much value and enjoyment can be derived.

5The DEFINITIVE text for classical Mathematical Analysis
By Jay Jina
The DEFINITIVE text for classical AnalysisThis book is the definitive text in classical Mathematical Analysis. It was first published in 1902 and the fact that it is still in print is testimony to it's wide ranging utility and appeal. It should be noted that this text is not for those who are new to the rigour of Analysis; its presentation is suitable for a final year undergraduate or for the post-graduate student. More importantly, its wide ranging content of proofs and results would also prove useful to the Physicist. The first part of the book covers the "essentials" of analysis: continuity, differentiability, summation of series, convergence and uniform convergence, and the theory of the Riemann integral. Subsequent chapters quickly but comprehensively develop the theory of analytic functions, the theorems of Cauchy, Laurent, and Liouville and the calculus of residues. These chapters knit very well into the earlier presentation of the basic processes of analysis! The pleasing thing is that despite the passage of time and the advent of hundreds of books on Complex Variable Theory, Whittaker and Watson's treatment still bears a mark of freshness and rigour. Also included is a comprehensive treatment of expanding functions in infinite series and asymptotic expansions and summability of series. For completeness, the text also covers the theory of linear differential equations and Fourier series. The second part of the book is what stands it apart from the rest. The authors provide a comprehensive discussion of the major transcendental functions: Gamma, Zeta, Hypergeometric, Legendre, and Bessel to name the more commonly encountered ones. The treatment is rigorous but the copious number of examples provides opportunity to learn the theory and apply it. Lots of apparently obscure results, many that would be useful in Physics applications, are cited as examples. The latter chapters presents a treatment of Elliptic, Theta and Mathieu functions.Overall, Whittaker and Watson will continue to be the guiding light for any serious scholar of classical analysis and an excellent reference point for the solutions to the fundamental equations of Mathematical Physics. Even though I am not a practising Mathematician, I find this a pleasant book to dip into: there's always a little surprise and something new to learn.

5Eye-Opening
By Daniele Pinna
As an undergraduate physics student, this book opened my eyes and made me realize what it means to actually be able to do mathematics. Normal people play with mathematics hoping to reach meaningful results, Whittaker shows you what it means to tame a wild beast and how to make it do whatever you want. Of course, any student of the 21st century must not pretend any true modern mathematics fro this text. Nonetheless, 'A Course of Modern Analysis' shows the reader what 19th century, old school, pre-calculator mathematics was all about. Any modern scientist can perfectly live and work productively without ever reading this book, yet, bathing in its flavor and its style is like appreciating the fine tuning of an early hand made automible as opposed to modern factory replicas. The problem sets and the examples all pretend extreme intellectual and instinctual ability in manipulating functions and infinite series. If one is only looking for a book of concepts, please stay away from this book. On the other hand, if one is interested in quantifying his or her lack of knowledge in that which is the beautiful realm of mathematics, this is what you're lookig for!! One can only learn from such a master....
