A cuttingly frank and hilarious indictment of war

Surely Remarque must have influenced Heller's "Catch 22": If you have the language, read this wonderful novel in its original German. This novel was translated into English under the title "All Quiet On The Western Front", from which was made the brilliant 1930 movie of the same name. It's the story of life in the trenches of the 1st World War, told from the perspective of a world-wearu 19-year-old German soldier in the trenches who is trying desperately to hang on to hope amid the harrowing, senseless carnage. A perfect German counterpoint to the remarkable English poetry of the same era.

Should be compulsory reading at this centenary year.

A very moving, harrowing but so human story from the "other side". This book eloquently shows how the footsoldiers on the German side were no different from our own in their hopes, fears and daily experience of the "great" war. Trouble is, it also shows how similar the officers were - their unbelievable smugness and arrogance only matched by their boundless incompetence and cluelessness about the nature of war with the modern weaponry of the time. The German is literate but accessible; although there are some terms that are not part of the modern vocabulary their meaning is pretty obvious from the context. If you don't speak German do seek out the English translation or the the film "All quiet on the western front"

excellent read

Superb delivery, much faster than expected from overseas.Read this in English 20 years ago, so thought I would tackle the original for the anniversary. Just as moving and insightful as first time. Would thoroughly recommend.
