By D. P. Lomax
Ok, first off - this is my favourite ever band and probably my favourite ever album. This review is for the kindle tab version of the guitar book. I purchased this thinking that it would be neat to have all the guitar notes at my fingers, stored on my ipad rather than adding to my mountain of guitar tab books. Anyhow, upon opening the tab edition i could instantly see just how small the tab numbers were on the screen, not a problem, i'll just zoom in! Now here's where the main issue is; if you use your thumb and index finger to zoom the tab numbers, the definition of the tab itself just disintegrates! It's akin to to zooming in on a 7kb jpeg on your laptop, it just becomes pixelated and blocky; you can't see the numbers. I really coudn't distinguish between 6 and 0. If you double tap the screen, the page itself separates from the book and allows a little more visibility, as the sheet becomes 'stand alone'. However, because this happens, the flow of music becomes totally lost as you have to then close this page off to go back to the main body tab. This method is very slow and cumbersome. Now if you want to learn each section of music bitesize maybe its not so bad, but when there are so many notes, you really need it to flow and see just what notes are ahead of you. This music is just too fast and complex to sit there squinting or using a magnifying glass to be able to read it. I guess as i've used guitar tab software packages i was expecting a similar size of font and clarity of instruction, unfortunately what you get is almost a photocopied port from the original book thats offers miniscule sized text that loses definition on zooming. There is no hope to anyone even remotely being able to emulate the legend that is petrucci with this tabversion as an aid. I'm going back to basics and buying the paper version!

I'm not really a guitarist but I am a musician and a huge DT fan. This book is awesome it takes you through all the guitar parts for evry track on the Scenes from a memory album. Plus unlike some tab books it seems to be pretty spot on giving you the full thing rather than just a watered down version. Also it was edited by John Petrucci himself so your safe in the knowledge that he's given his seal of approval. If you've got the ability to pull it off then you'll love this book. Even if you haven't (like me) its still worth buying just for the hell of it. Plus its a good laugh reading through all the odd time signatures and keys.

By Glen41
This book posses by far the most accurate transcription of any album I have ever seen, most likely due to the influence and personal overseeing by the man who wrote the majority of it, John Petrucci. The book is ideal for any guitarist/Dream Theater fan looking to expand their knowledge and abilities on the guitar. BE WARNED, many of the parts in this book are very challenging and definitely suited towards advanced players, there are however still plenty of very cool riffs an intermediate player should have no trouble with. The book in conjunction with lots of practice will also help intermediate players reach that advanced level.Another important note is this book contains ONLY the guitar and vocal parts, none of the keyboard solos (which often sound similar to guitar)are notated.A brilliant album and spotless transcription, well worth a look!
