Wilhelm Busch - very famous in the German speaking world for his illustrations and wit (rightly so) - is that rare of authors, who manages to make books austensibly for children, which at the same time delight the adult reading them.Max und Moritz (or Max and Maurice in the translation) is probably the most widely read of his works and basically follows two mischevious boys through seven of their tricks. There is the crime and punishment element in there (of the 'don't do it' kind) but I always remember as a child enjoying the tricks much more than being horrified by the ending.The book is written in verse and the wittiness of it is the book's unique selling proposition. It is illustrated throughout and the drawings themselves heighten the appeal - forming part of Busch's brilliance in the first place.On top of the glee of the kids reading this (or rather having it read to them), the mischevious fun for the adult doing the same, the book also does a good job of portraying various cultural aspects of 19th century Germany (to the extent possible by the format).In the end, a highly recommended book to get, never fails to make me laugh and brighten a day - I would say well worth giving it a try. The English translation (for those rustier with German) - Max and Maurice.: A Story of two mischievous boys in seven tricks - is really excellent, too and hardly anything gets lost in translation.

I'm a pop up book collector and Max und Moritz is a very nice german book.It gets a good place in my collection and I can recommend it.
